Ever since the release of Windows 8, Microsoft is allowing users download ISO image of the operating system by entering the product key. The downloaded ISO can then be used to create bootable USB or DVD to install Windows. This is helpful for users who have deleted the recovery image or partition but want to perform clean install or reinstall of Windows.
In fact, it’s even possible to legally download Windows 8.1 ISO from Microsoft even if you can’t locate the product key. This method is helpful for users who don’t want to recover the product key just to download the ISO file.
Download Windows 7 ISO image
If you’re running Windows 7 and want to download Windows 7 ISO image from Microsoft by entering the product key, you can do so now. As said before, you just need to enter the product key of your Windows 7 edition located on the box of Windows 7 or on the back of your laptop to legally download the ISO image of Windows 7 from Microsoft.
To download Windows 7 ISO image, head over to this Windows 7 Software Recovery webpage, enter your 25 character product key (it should on the back of your laptop or under the battery of your notebook), select your Windows 7 language, and then click Next-Verify Product Key button.
Update: It turns out that the above mentioned Windows 7 Software Recovery webpage is only for retail and upgrade copies not for OEM copies, meaning if Windows 7 came pre-installed with your new PC, you can’t download the ISO from the above link.
As you some of you know, Microsoft has already made it clear that Windows 7 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 RTM for absolutely free of cost within a year after the release of Windows 10 RTM.
We recommend you upgrade to Windows 10 from your exiting Windows 7 soon after the release of Windows 10 RTM. Note that when you upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, you’ll be able to keep your personal files, Windows settings, and most of installed programs.
