Review: Mobicel Air Smartphone

Africa has seen quite a few low to mid-range smartphones hit the market recently. The latest device to land in Africa is the Mobicel Air. Retailing for a recommended retail price (RRP) of R3500 (USD $289, according to current exchange rate), the Mobicel Air comes packed with some great features, as well as a surprisingly impressive processor.

Not many low-cost devices come with a powerful processor; however, the Mobicel Air is set to change this trend. When taking a closure look at the technical specs of the device, we found that it features a 1.7 GHz Octa-Core processor. The device also features 1GB of RAM, which is 1 GB less than other devices on the market. While the lack of RAM was a concern, the processor allows the device to keep up to speed with other leading Android-based smartphones. While reviewing the Mobicel Air, we ran quite a few high end games and apps on the Mobicel Air. Most apps and games run smoothly, but this may change as upcoming games and apps may require that missing 1GB of RAM.

Mobicel Air Review

When taking a look at the build quality of the Mobicel Air, you can clearly see that is has been designed and manufactured with class in mind. Weighing in at only 97 grams, with a thickness of 5.1mm, the Mobicel Air is one of the lightest and thinnest devices on the market. To add to this, the device comes with 4.8″ Super AMOLED touchscreen and a glass back cover. The overall build quality of the device is superb; however, the glass back cover is prone to cracks if dropped. Thankfully, the device manufacturer has included a cover with the device in order to protect it against drops.

Moving away from build quality, the Mobicel Air features a 8MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP front-facing camera. The rear camera performs rather well while used in well lit locations; however, it does tend to struggle when used in low-light conditions. Most of the newer devices come with a 13MP rear-facing camera, which makes the Mobicel Air’s 8MP rear-facing camera come in below par. Overall, the device is great for quick snaps and those all important selfies; however, the quality may not be as sharp as other devices on the market… especially in low-light conditions.

While most consumers look at the camera and processing power first, they tend to overlook call quality of a device. While the Mobicel may lack performance in the photography sector, we found no fault with call and sound quality.

Conclusion:
The Mobicel Air is great device with a surprisingly fast processor. Its only downside is the device’s ability to shoot decent photos in low-light conditions. For its price, the Mobicel Air is a great option… especially for those not looking to break the bank when it comes to purchasing a decent smartphone. To add to this, the device features a great build quality and an extremely classy design.

Overall, the Mobicel Air is definitely worth picking up if you are looking for a light, powerful, and classy looking device.
